Welcome to the website of photographer Andrea De Silva. Andrea is based in Trinidad and Tobago, a twin-island Republic in the Caribbean, but her life as a documenter of the human experience through her camera has taken her all over the world. She has worked for 24 years as a photojournalist.
She started off her career at the Trinidad Publishing Company, where she stayed for 13 years. She then left to join the paper's rival, the Express Newspapers, where she stayed for 6 years. In 2001, Andrea returned to the place where her career began, this time as an Associate Editor of Photography, working on The Wire and the company's main publication, the Trinidad Guardian. Within a short period, the quality of her work, as well as her diligence, earned her the title of Acting Editor of Photography.
Andrea is one of the best photojournalists in Trinidad and Tobago, a statement that is supported by the numerous awards she won for her work. She has received several awards for her photography. In 1997 she won Best News Photograph in the Media Association of Trinidad and Tobago (MATT). She won first and third prize in (Caribbean Airlines' in flight publication) Caribbean Beat Magazine’s Photo Competition in 2000. Between 2003 and 2006 Andrea’s work was cited for several honors from the Association of Media Photographers of Trinidad and Tobago (AMPOTT) including Best Fashion Photo, Best Feature Photo, Best Carnival Photo, Best Facial Expression Photo and Best Social Photo. She also received a special award for Best Soca Warriors Photo in the 2006 World Cup Trinidad Coverage. The organization named her Photographer of the Year in 2003 and in 2006 she was presented with an Honorary Award for meritorious service as a Photographer.
In December 2006 Andrea left The Guardian to form Silva Image, an all purpose photography company. Her photos have graced the covers of many Caribbean publications, including Island Life, Discover Trinidad & Tobago, Caribbean Beat, Generation Lion , OCEANA and Trinidad and Tobago Terrific and Tranquil. She has also freelanced for a number of international publications including USA’s In Touch Weekly and Vibe Magazine, Ocean Style Magazine, Spain's Everyone has a good story football, UK’s Songlines Magazine, Poland’s Fakt Newspaper, Germany’s Riddim Magazine, Billboard Magazine, Reuters, the world’s largest multimedia international news agency and Efe news agency, the largest Spanish language news agency in the world and the fourth largest news agency overall.
Andrea's interest in photography extends far beyond the realms of photojournalism. She is passionate about the Arts and Culture and some of her most impressive work is taken at live events such as dance recitals, concerts or music and cultural festivals. She is also able to capture the distinctive details of different countries during her travels.
Andrea's role as a single mother of four has only served to enhance her eye for beauty and individualism, but she thinks she has a long way to go to realise her greatest potential as a photographer.
This is her website. See the world through her lens, her eyes, her heart.
